Motivational Monday: Hope

In some of my Facebook Groups I often hear folks talking about a lack of views or lack of sales.  Keeping up to date on the latest website algorithm changes is very important.  Staying informed helps me determine when I might need to make tweaks to my product listings or marketing strategies.  However; it is equally important to guard my heart and mind from “Negative Nellies”. 

Selling your art isn’t an impossible task.  The odds aren’t stacked against you.  One bad sales day or week isn’t the end of your livelihood.  It’s all part of the journey.  Stay positive, stay focused, and stay in the game!

Motivational Monday: Nothing Works Better

Last week I talked about products that just don’t work out.  Today, we’ll focus on ideas to improve products that are working out well.  After every season you should consider reviewing your sales results.  You are a creative business owner and as such, you have a fiduciary responsibility to yourself and your business.  Products that aren’t selling well may need to be cut from your product line or repurposed.  But don't forget to review your best sellers.  Your first instinct might be to advertise more and that is a good start.  But you may want to think about these 3 things too.

 Can you improve the product design?

If a particular item is selling well, you’ve probably found shortcuts to produce them more quickly.  Let’s say you’re making jewelry.  Last season you received several requests for customization.  Next season you may want to add another product listing specifically for customization.  Or maybe you can offer an eco-friendly version.  Maybe customers fell in love with the gemstone you used.  Could you use that gemstone in another item?   

 Can you use higher quality materials?

Most of us create using the best quality items we can find.  But perhaps there is room for improvement.  Improving the quality of the materials you use can allow you to offer varying price points of items in your shop. 

Can you improve the buying experience?

After a season ends is the perfect time to review the buying experience.  Identify the product tags and descriptions that work well and use them, where appropriate, in your other products.  You may want to review your seller communication.  Is there a way to personalize the communication?  Are you gathering emails to communicate with your customers after the sale? 
Take some time to review your packaging.  Are you including elements of your branding in the packaging?  If your customers care about how you package their purchase, brainstorm ways to improve the packaging.  I used to use labels to mark a package fragile.  Now I use a more cost effective and eco-friendly stamp.      

Improving your product and services just makes good business sense and it also keeps you ahead of the competition.

Motivational Monday: Don't Worry About Failure

Over the years I’ve had products that weren’t successful.  Tastes changes or perhaps I didn’t gauge customer interest very well.  For whatever reason, I’ve had to face the fact that it just isn't feasible to continue to sell a particular item.  

As time progressed I’ve learned to take these realizations in stride.  First, I review my price point. From time to time I’ve lowered my price on an item and it seems to fly off the shelves! If that doesn't work, I reevaluate the product details to see if any elements can be salvaged.  If they can, I create a new item. But there are times when I’ve realized that a product just doesn’t hit the mark.  If the quality is up to snuff, I usually include the surplus as a surprise special gift in new orders.  I learned to view these situations as little bumps in the road knowing that I can always bounce back.
